Description

The Tomatillo is also called green or Mexican tomato. This is a fruit with a sour taste, which can be compared to a green apple. The round berry has a papery ‘lantern’ covering with a green tomato inside. Because of its sweet-sour taste, the fruit can be used in many different dishes.

You often find the tomatillo in cans, but these are of course not fresh. The tomatillos of Westlandpeppers have that real, fresh experience.

The Tomatillo is a must in Mexican cuisine, just like the Jalapeño and Poblano. The sharpness of a pepper goes well with the slightly sour taste of the tomatillo. That is why the fresh tomatillo is often used to make (spicy) salsas, but is also very good for roasting, baking or grilling the fruit.

It is best to store fresh tomatillos in the fridge or in a cool, dark place in a utility room, cellar cupboard, barn, etc. The ideal temperature is between 10°C and 13°C. Then they will last the longest, around 7 to 14 days. If you cannot use everything immediately fresh, freeze the tomatillo’s, remove the casing/lampion and cut into cubes (after this the tomatillo is only suitable for warm preparations).
