Description
Hoja Santa, also known as Piper Auritum, Mexican Pepper Leaf, Acuyo or Anisillo, is an aromatic herb with a heart-shaped velvety leaf. It has a complex taste and can have a diameter of 30 cm. The flavours Eucalyptus, Anise, mint, nutmeg and tarragon are all found in the fresh Hoya Santa. Hoja Santa is a leaf that is widely used in Latin American cuisine. The leaf can be used as a wrapper to wrap food and then steam or bake it. But of course, it can also be used as a herb for a flavour twist in your dish.
The product is sold per 2 pieces in a plastic bag with a small amount of water. In this way, the leaf remains strong and retains its character during transport. This product is new at Westlandpeppers and therefore still in development. It is possible that the leaf contains (small) holes.
Storage & shelf life
It is best to store the fresh herbs in the fridge. Wash the leaves with cold water and wrap them in a few sheets of kitchen paper or a sandwich bag. Keep this in the vegetable drawer of your fridge. This way the herbs stay good the longest, about 1 week. It is also possible to freeze or dry the leaves. Click here for more information.
