Hoja Santa, Pepper leaf, Acuyo, Anisillo, Mexican Pepperleaf, Sacred pepper, Root beer Plant, these are all names for this very special product. Hoja Santa is a leaf that’s widely used in the Latin-American kitchen. It’s complex in taste and can have a diameter of 30cm. The flavours eucalyptus, anise, mint, nutmeg and tarragon can all be found in the fresh Hoja Santa. The leaf is perfect to make Tamales or Mole Verde with, but it can also be used as a spice to any dish.
The product is sold per 2 leaves in a plastic bag with a small amount of water. This keeps the leaves strong during transport and maintains its distinctive flavour. If you can’t use them fresh immediately, you can store the leaves in the refrigerator for another 5 days. You can also dry the leaf. This product is new at Westlandpepperss and therefore still under development, so it is possible that the leaf contains (small) holes.
