Zeeuwsche Zoute is sea salt from the Oosterschelde in The Netherlands, pure and unique in taste. It has an intensely salty taste and crackles wonderfully when sprinkled over a dish. The clean water from the Oosterschelde gives Zeeuwsche Zoute a pure and intensely white appearance that you will hardly find with any other kind of sea salt. It has a saltier taste because the calcium is scraped off by hand. This means less salt is needed to still create that unique taste experience and give a sensational boost to your dishes. Perfect for seasoning your Pimientos de Padron or Shishito peppers!
How is the salt made? – From sea water to salt crystal
The story of salt starts with its origins: the water from the Oosterschelde estuary. This is pumped at high tide from the waters near Bruinisse where the water is extra purified by mussels and oyster beds. The water is then additionally filtered for microplastics and other impurities without the sea salt losing its natural mineral value. Then they start evaporating the seawater. The salt water is placed in smaller, open salt pans. Here, they then heat the water through a unique process until the salt crystals: in the shape of pyramids that can form upside down on the surface of the water. This stage is the true craft of salt making. With the knowledge and experience of harvesting the salt by hand, they know exactly when the flakes have the right flavour and texture.
