Description

The Tomatillo, also known as the green tomato or Mexican groundcherry, is a special fruit with a unique, fresh taste. Its flavor is best compared to a green apple: slightly tart and super refreshing. This round berry is wrapped in a papery 'husk' that protects the green tomato inside. Thanks to its sweet and sour taste, the tomatillo is a versatile addition to tons of dishes.

You often find tomatillos canned, but those aren't fresh, of course. Westlandpeppers' tomatillos give you that real fresh experience.

The Tomatillo is a must-have in Mexican cuisine, just like the Jalapeño and Poblano. The spiciness of a pepper creates a perfect balance with the tomatillo's slight tartness. That's why fresh tomatillos are often used to make spicy salsas, but they're also great for roasting, baking, or grilling.

Store fresh Tomatillos in the fridge or a cool, dark spot like a pantry, cellar, or shed. The ideal temperature is between 10°C and 13°C; this way, your tomatillos will stay good for the longest, about 7 to 14 days. If you can't use them all fresh right away, freeze the tomatillos: just remove the husk and cut them into cubes (after freezing, they're only suitable for cooked dishes).

This product is grown in our greenhouses in the Netherlands and is available from March to November. It's not available from November to March because it's not grown by our growers abroad.

Excellent quality and flavour, the real deal (coming from a Mexican living in NL). Absolutely recommend this product. You won’t be disappointed. Quick and simple recipe for authentic green Mexican salsa (my mum’s):
Ingredients: 1/2 kg tomatillo (without the casing, chopped up into 4 pieces); 1/4 cup diced onions; 3 serrano peppers (available from Westlandpeppers, can also be jalapenios but serrano’s are better for this); 1/2 teaspoon garlic; 1/4 cup coriander (coarsely chopped); 1 1/2 teaspoon salt.
Directions: blend the tomatillos and onion in a blender for 20 seconds, no water needed. Then add the rest of the ingredients and blend for another 5 seconds. Check for salt, add more if needed. Serve at room temperature.
How to eat: add to tacos, rice, eggs… It’s a bit sour, and it’s great.

Taste really awesome. You can eat them like an apple.
