Description

The Shishito is a Japanese pepper. This mildly spicy, green pepper has a firm and savory flavor. Its name, Shishito, means 'lion's head' in Japanese, referring to how the bottom of the pepper looks. In the kitchen, it's similar to Pimientos de Padron, but it really shines with traditional Japanese dishes. They're usually roasted in a pan with a bit of sesame oil and soy sauce. They're also fantastic with teppanyaki, skewered for yakitori, or even battered and fried as tempura!

Recipe
1. Rinse and thoroughly dry the peppers. Pop them into a mixing bowl, add olive oil/sesame oil, and toss to coat.
2. Get your pan ready! Place a large (cast iron) frying pan over medium-high heat. Let it warm up for about 2 minutes, or until you see a little smoke.
3. Carefully arrange the Shishito peppers in a single layer in the pan and let them sear for 2 to 3 minutes, or until they're nicely charred and browned. Use tongs to flip them and cook the other side until they're blistered too, about 2 more minutes.
4. Transfer the grilled peppers to a plate or platter and season with salt and soy sauce.
You can also make these in the oven or on the BBQ!

Keep your fresh Shishito chili peppers in the fridge or a cool, dark spot like a pantry, cellar, or shed. The perfect temperature is between 10°C and 13°C; this will keep them fresh for the longest, usually about 7 to 14 days. You can also freeze them! During the summer season (April-November), we grow these peppers right here in the Netherlands in our own greenhouses. Then, for the winter season (November-April), our awesome growers in Spain take over!

The Shishito is available year-round, but it's still a natural product. So, due to various circumstances, the product might be unavailable or limited at certain times.

I got a little box of these in my surprise package. I ended up munching them all by myself in one go because they were so delicious! What a great, healthy snack! Hardly any heat, but super flavorful.
