The Tomatillo, also known as the green tomato or Mexican earth cherry, is a special fruit with a unique, fresh taste. This flavor is best compared to that of a green apple: slightly acidic and refreshing. The round berry is enveloped by a papery "lantern" that protects the green tomato inside. Thanks to its sweet-sour flavor, the tomatillo is a versatile addition to numerous dishes.
You often find canned tomatillo, but of course these are not fresh. The tomatillos from Westlandpeppers have that real fresh, fresh experience.
The Tomatillo is a must in Mexican cuisine, as are the Jalapeño and Poblano. The sharpness of a pepper forms a perfect balance with the slight acidity of the tomatillo. This is why the fresh tomatillo is widely used to make spicy salsas, but it is also excellent for roasting, baking or grilling.

Store fresh Tomatillo's in the refrigerator or a cool dark place in a pantry, cellar cupboard, shed, etc. Ideal temperature is between 10°C and 13°C, then the tomatillo's will keep the longest, about 7 to 14 days. If you can't use everything fresh right away freeze the tomatillos, remove the casing and cut into cubes (after this, use only for hot preparations).
During the summer season (April-November), this product is grown in the Netherlands in our own greenhouses or in Spain with our own growers.

Excellent quality and flavor, the real deal (coming from a Mexican living in NL). Absolutely recommend this product. You won't be disappointed. Quick and simple recipe for authentic green Mexican salsa (my mum's):
Ingredients: 1/2 kg tomatillo (without the casing, chopped up into 4 pieces); 1/4 cup diced onions; 3 serrano peppers (available from Westlandpeppers, can also be jalapenios but serrano's are better for this); 1/2 teaspoon garlic; 1/4 cup coriander (coarsely chopped); 1 1/2 teaspoon salt.
Directions: blend the tomatillos and onion in a blender for 20 seconds, no water needed. Then add the rest of the ingredients and blend for another 5 seconds. Check for salt, add more if needed. Serve at room temperature.
How to eat: add to tacos, rice, eggs... It's a bit sour, and it's great.
