Guided tour & Workshop Making Tjatnie

Are you curious about where our special peppers come from and how to use them in Surinamese cuisine? Then come to our Guided Tour + Workshop on making Tjatnie at Westlandpeppers Raghenie Bhawanie on Saturday, April 18!

During this unique experience, we will take you behind the scenes in our greenhouse. You will see where and how our chili peppers are grown, hear interesting facts about cultivation, and have plenty of opportunity to ask questions. Discover the growing process, take photos, and enjoy the scent and color of fresh plants and peppers. Afterward, we will dive into Surinamese cuisine and you will get to work making your own Tjatnie.

Tjatnie is the spicy counterpart to chutney. Whereas the well-known British-Indian chutney is often sweet and resembles a fruity sauce, Surinamese tjatnie is much spicier, fresher, and more pronounced in flavor. It originates from Indian cuisine, but developed its own character in Suriname, made with Madame Jeanette peppers, spices, and chunky textures in which you can really taste the main ingredient. Think mango, apple, or even raw potato. Not your standard mango chutney, but a pure, spicy sensation that makes roti, bara, and masala dishes irresistible.

During this workshop, Raghenie Bhawanie will also provide much more information about Surinamese cuisine. She will take a closer look at how Madame Jeanette pepper is viewed by the different ethnic groups living in Suriname. She will also teach the basics of making Surinamese-Javanese sambal and a quick Saoto soup with ketjap sambal.
