Description

Dried Serrano chiles are mildly spicy Mexican peppers. When fresh, green Serrano peppers are crisp and spicy, but once they're ripened and dried, their flavor changes quite a bit! The pepper develops a sweet, fruity, and smoky taste. This happens because the pepper stays on the plant longer and then gets dried. The name Serrano comes from 'sierra,' which means mountain in Spanish, because the pepper originally comes from the mountains in northern Mexico. These dried peppers are often used to make sauces and marinades, but honestly, you can add them as a flavor booster to pretty much any dish!

Preparation
– First, toast the dried peppers in a dry skillet over medium heat for about 2 minutes. This helps release their essential oils and brings out more flavor. Next, rehydrate the dried peppers with hot water. Let them soak in hot water for 15-20 minutes, then slice or chop them to your desired size.
– You can also grind the dried peppers into flakes or powder.

To keep dried chili peppers fresh for a long time, store them in an airtight container in your pantry or, even better, in the freezer. Avoid exposing them to air, moisture, light, and heat, as this can cause them to discolor, mold, and lose flavor.

Dried peppers last a long time, but for the best flavor and heat, try to use them within a year. Click here for more info on storing and freezing dried chili peppers.
