Management Westlandpeppers

Who are we?

In 1930, Hendrik Boekestijn started the farm now known as Westlandpeppers. He began growing grapes, peaches, leeks and cauliflower.

He was later succeeded by his son Pieter Boekestijn. By now his three sons Henk, Dolf and Pieter have managed to expand the company into a business with a wide assortment of peppers, snack peppers and other products. And the fourth generation is also working in the family business.

From April to November, produce comes from our own greenhouses in the Netherlands. From November to April the products come from Spain, Morocco and Israel, where we have been working with the same growers for years. This allows us to offer peppers and snack peppers all year round.

Our vision

Westlandpeppers has a passion for growing beautiful, natural and healthy products. We do this through innovative, sustainable and market-oriented cultivation and business.

Thus, we are always developing to offer new and improved products. Every year we grow new species and varieties so that we can offer a wide range of products with the best quality.

We are also committed to preventing food waste. For example, we supply the food bank and make sauces from the 'less' nice products. We also dry products in a special drying cell at our location in 's-Gravenzande. By giving away and using these class 2 peppers, we try to throw away as few peppers as possible. With this we want to prevent food waste.

We hold the following certificates: Global GAP, GRASP, Global GAP COC, PlanetProof, IFS Food, IFS Broker & AH Better for.

Sustainability

Westlandpeppers wants to operate as sustainably as possible in the areas of cultivation, biological control, packaging, energy, water and waste. So that we can provide people now and in the future with fresh peppers and peppers with minimal impact on people and the environment.

Packaging

For packing the webshop orders, we try to use cardboard as much as possible and minimize plastic. Although the use of plastic when packing the peppers is not always useless or unnecessary. In fact, it makes the products last longer.

Energy

Our long-term goal is to use as little fossil energy as possible. In recent years, for example, we have invested heavily in solar panels. A total of 2239 solar panels have been installed at our De Lier & 's-Gravenzande location. These will have generated 435,000 KWh of sustainable energy by 2023, equivalent to the consumption of 174 households per year and about half of our annual consumption.

We are also working to sustainably heat the greenhouses with geothermal heat in the future. We are affiliated with Aardwarmte Maasdijk, which is a collaboration of more than 80 greenhouse horticulture companies, whose goal is to get sustainable heat for the greenhouses. The project has been running for a number of years and at the beginning of 2022 they started building the heat network.

Biological control Westlandpeppers

Biological control

We use organic crop protection and apply it preventively at the beginning of cultivation. Only when a disease or pest gets out of hand and can no longer be controlled with biological crop protection, we apply chemical control on a spot-by-spot basis.

Due to very experienced greenhouse employees, we can often detect diseases and pests at the very beginning and control them with biological crop protection. Naturally, we prefer not to use chemical crop protection and only do so when necessary and always in limited amounts. With this, we amply meet the strict requirements of supermarkets and PlanetProof.
