Tomatillo
€4,00 – €8,00
Description
The Tomatillo is also called green tomato or Mexican tomato. This is a fruit with a sour taste, which can be compared to a green apple. The round berry has a paper-like ‘lampion’ casing with a green tomato inside. Because of the sweet and sour taste, the fruit can be used in many different dishes. The Tomatillo is a must in Mexican cuisine, just like the Jalapeño and Poblano. The sharpness of a chilli goes well with the slightly sour taste of the tomatillo. That is why the tomatillo is often used to make (spicy) sauces, but is also very good to use for roasting, baking or grilling the fruit.
Storage & shelf life
It is best to store fresh tomatillos in the fridge or in a cool, dark place in a utility room, cellar cupboard, barn, etc. The ideal temperature is between 10°C and 13°C. Then they will last the longest, around 7 to 14 days. If you cannot use everything immediately fresh, freeze the tomatillo’s, remove the casing/lampion and cut into cubes (after this the tomatillo is only suitable for warm preparations).

Excellent quality and flavour, the real deal (coming from a Mexican living in NL). Absolutely recommend this product. You won’t be disappointed. Quick and simple recipe for authentic green Mexican salsa (my mum’s):
Ingredients: 1/2 kg tomatillo (without the casing, chopped up into 4 pieces); 1/4 cup diced onions; 3 serrano peppers (available from Westlandpeppers, can also be jalapenios but serrano’s are better for this); 1/2 teaspoon garlic; 1/4 cup coriander (coarsely chopped); 1 1/2 teaspoon salt.
Directions: blend the tomatillos and onion in a blender for 20 seconds, no water needed. Then add the rest of the ingredients and blend for another 5 seconds. Check for salt, add more if needed. Serve at room temperature.
How to eat: add to tacos, rice, eggs… It’s a bit sour, and it’s great.
