Description

Discover the versatile and globally loved Spanish chilli pepper, also known as the ‘common’ chilli pepper, Lombok or Cayenne. Pepper red/green/yellow is a collective name for the familiar elongated chilli peppers and it is used in just about all cuisines worldwide. Hence there are so many different names for this pepper, each country/culture has given it its own name. Although there are different breeds within this variety, it is actually all basically the same pepper. The chilli pepper has a mildly spicy flavour, which is why it can be used in any dish.

The origin of the chilli, “Capsicum annuum”, lies in Central and South America, where it has been grown and used in indigenous cuisines for thousands of years. Archaeological excavations show that chilli peppers were cultivated more than 6.000 years ago in areas such as Mexico, Guatemala and Peru. After the Spanish conquest of the Americas in the 15th and 16th centuries, Spanish explorers and colonisers spread chilli peppers around the world, making them an important part of cuisines in Europe, Asia and Africa. Hence, we know this pepper in the Netherlands mainly by the name Spanish pepper. Today, chilli peppers are grown worldwide, with major producers in countries such as India, China, Mexico and Indonesia.

They are a popular ingredient in numerous dishes and are appreciated for their unique flavour, mild spiciness, versatility and nutritional value. Whether you are making a pasta, sambal, stew, curry or soup, this pepper can be used in every dish.

The red chilies are slightly spicier than the green ones, want to know why? Read our blog about the difference in red and green chilies here.

It is best to store the fresh chillies in the refrigerator or in a cool dark place in a pantry, cellar cabinet, barn etc. The ideal temperature is between 10 °C and 13 °C, then the chillies stay the longest good, about 7 to 14 days. It is also possible to freeze the chillies, then you always have a supply. Click here for more information about freezing chilli peppers or other ways to preserve them for a long time.

In the summer season (April-November) this product is grown in the Netherlands in our own greenhouses. In the winter season (November-April) this product is grown in Spain, Israel and Morocco by our own growers.

The Spanish chilli pepper is available all year round, but it is still a nature product. It is therefore possible that, due to circumstances, the product is not or limited available at certain times.
