Description

Epazote is a herb widely used in Mexican cuisine. The plant spreads a strong, smokey lemon/mint scent, it gives a very typical much-appreciated taste to dishes. It is used in countless Mexican dishes with beans, but it can be used in all Mexican dishes. The taste is so strong that you often don’t have to use much of it to give a dish that typical Mexican “touch”.

Epazote has been used for centuries in traditional herbal medicine as an anthelmintic. By turning the leaves and flowers into a tea, intestinal cramps, liver and other stomach problems can be treated, but Epazote can be poisonous when ingested excessively. This treatment is not used in modern medicine, because safer effective means and medicines are available. It is recommended that pregnant or breastfeeding women avoid large amounts of epazote.

It is best to store the fresh herbs in the fridge. Wash the leaves with cold water and wrap them in a few sheets of paper towel or a sandwich bag. Store this in the vegetable drawer of your fridge. This way the herbs stay good the longest, about 1 week. It is also possible to freeze or dry the leaves. Click here for more information.

This product is grown in our greenhouses in the Netherlands and is available from April to November. This product is not available from November to April because it is not grown at our growers in Spain, Israel & Morocco.
